Downtown St. Petersburg

Don't forget your metro card, or else you'll have to stand in line and attempt to buy a new one from a disgruntled metro employee.

Our university was located just a few metro stops north of Nevsky Prospect/Gostiny Dvor, so we were downtown almost every day. Here are some random pictures that didn't really fit into a category.

One of St. Petersburg's many canals...there is a good reason they call this place the "Northern Venice".

On the 4th of July we ate at a Russian restaurant called "Kalinka Malinka", which had great Borscht (yeah I know, not quite a staple 4th of July food). The waiter spoke English, too, which is always a plus.

The first time we went downtown, this is the graffiti we saw. A warm welcome from some Russians.

And of course we had to pose with the graffiti.

Breese, Jessie, myself, and Kate. These were my suitemates in the dorm. Here we are on a boat on one of the canals. We took a night cruise on the Neva and saw the open bridges. It was pretty cool.

If I had a good camera, I would have taken a picture like this, but I didn't, so here is a postcard of the famous open bridges. Every night the bridges are opened for several hours to allow large ships to navigate the Neva. Of course, the bridges could also be a pain in the ass if you wanted to get from one island to another at 3am...if you miss the opportunity to cross and they open...too bad, you're stuck there for a few hours.

I took this picture coming out of Gostini Dvor, a large mall. Alot of buildings along Nevsky Prospect are being refurbished.

My Nevsky Prospect compass, the Kazaan Cathedral. (postcard)

A picture of the Neva from the deck of the Aurora.

BLINIS!!!! This is myself in front of a Blini stand with a blini in each hand. Blinis were definitely the favorite Russian food. They are really thin pancakes and they can be filled with almost anything you want. I like ham and cheese blinis or banana and chocolate blinis. Too bad there are no blini stands in the United States.
